COLIN METTERS
INTERNATIONAL MASTERCLASS
SEASON 2023/24
“The CIAC Conducting Academy is delighted to announce a new and comprehensive conducting programme for our 2023/24 season! An integrated programme of study with Colin Metters whose holistic approach to the study of conducting is truly unique. This further develops the ongoing partnership between CIAC and Colin Metters and represents a serious addition to the opportunities available for aspiring conductors.”
Jonathan Mann – CIAC Artistic Director
“ Colin Metters is considered universally to be one of the world's most distinguished and sought-after conducting pedagogues. If the test of any great teacher is the respect that he commands from his students, then Colin Metters is without doubt a great teacher.”
Raymond Holden - conductor, broadcaster, lecturer and respected author of books on conductors and conducting.
“Colin enables musicians from many traditions to develop and thrive, both as musicians and people. It is his ability to place himself in other people's shoes that has defined his role as one of the great conducting mentors.”
Jonathan Freeman-Attwood - Principal, Royal Academy of Music
Testimonials from participants on previous Colin Metters' masterclasses:
“I want to thank you for the wonderful masterclass. I have been thinking deeply about what I learned from your masterful teaching. I have spent much time integrating this new information into myself and it has had a profound impact on my way forward in conducting. Thank you for your patience, humour and fairness with each and every one of us. You demonstrated to us the most extraordinary respect and dedication to teaching that I have seen in many years.”

“Colin Metters' pedagogy interconnects intellectual rigour, emotional honesty and gestural clarity. With an unflinching eye, Metters guides, interrogates assumptions, demands musical integrity and challenges the students to turn up the volume on their own imagination.”
Carolyn A.

“I could not have imagined or wished for a better teacher and mentor; someone with more intuition and dedication, insight and generosity. I count myself only too fortunate to have been your student Colin. For all this and much more please accept my gratitude and thanks.”

~~~~~~~~~~~
During his 30 year tenure as Head of Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music, Colin Metters established a conducting programme recognised internationally as world renowned. He now enjoys an independent freelance career as conducting pedagogue and mentor, working with aspiring conductors all over the world. He is Emeritus Professor of Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music, gives masterclasses each term at the Royal College of Music, has given masterclasses at the Music Academy in Krakow as Visiting Professor of Conducting and works regularly with the CIAC Conducting Academy.
A personal message from Colin Metters:
“I'm thrilled to be working again with Jonathan Mann and the CIAC Conducting Academy in this exciting new and innovative project in conductor training. CIAC has an increasing reputation in the area of conducting masterclasses and practical opportunities for conductors. I very much look forward to welcoming aspiring conductors to this integrated programme of study and conducting.”
PROGRAMME OUTLINE
The programme below is conceived as an integrated course of study across three masterclasses and participants are encouraged to enrol for all three if at all possible. However, they are also designed to “stand alone” if necessary and all participants are welcome to apply on whatever basis suits them.
MASTERCLASS I
Mahler, Symphony no. 4
Rachmaninov, Symphony no. 2
This is designed as an entirely “live” event. As the first of the three masterclasses all the conductors will come together and meet face to face on the first day in London. The repertoire is deliberately ambitious. We have chosen two major symphonic works to stimulate and inspire imaginations and present us – on our launch project – with some serious challenges. In the hands of our experienced professional instrumentalists and with the insight and intuition of Colin Metters holistic teaching we will make an in depth study of these two great symphonies with a full exploration of the musical and technical challenges for the conductor.
MASTERCLASS II
Brahms, Violin Concerto
Dvorak, Cello Concerto
The whole of our second masterclass is unashamedly dedicated to concerto repertoire. Too often concertos are sidelined both as a source of study for conductors and even on occasions in allocation of rehearsal time. This inevitably results in an undervaluing of the art and craft of “accompanying” and a lack of understanding of the skill and expertise required for a conductor to be a true accompanist as opposed to simply trying to follow the soloist.
To this end we have selected two of the great works in this genre - the Brahms Violin Concerto and the Dvorak Cello Concerto - two of the most challenging concertos for the conductor. There will be two days of virtual score study and preparation followed by four days intensive work in London with piano quintet and two renowned soloists: violinist Magdalena Filipzcak and cellist Liubov Ulybysheva. An outstanding and unique opportunity and something not to be missed!
MASTERCLASS III
Haydn, Symphony no. 99
Brahms, Violin Concerto
Mendelssohn, Symphony no. 3. ‘Scottish’
This is the culmination of our tripartite programme of work. The repertoire forms the basis for the final concert which will take place in Cardiff with the professional orchestra Ensemble Cambrica (www.ensemblecambrica.co.uk) and Polish violinist Magdalena Filipczak (https://magdalenafilipczak.com). This seven day masterclass will be supported with virtual score study and preparation on the 10th and 11th of February followed by five live masterclass days in Cardiff. When in Cardiff participants will work through a process of silent conducting, piano, quintet and orchestral sessions culminating in the final public concert.
