COLIN METTERS
1st PARIS INTERNATIONAL CONDUCTING MASTERCLASS
April 11 - 19, 2024
“The CIAC Conducting Academy in collaboration with Marianne Drobot is delighted to announce an exciting new masterclass for conductors in Paris! This is a further opportunity to study with Colin Metters whose holistic approach to the study of conducting is truly unique. The masterclass develops our ongoing partnership with Colin Metters and expands the opportunities we are able to provide aspiring conductors across Europe.”
Jonathan Mann – CIAC Artistic Director
“Colin Metters will call upon your sincere motivation to serve Music. His capacity to see what makes you a unique musician and to personalise his teaching will give you the power to understand and shape the sound before approaching the technicality of orchestral conducting.
One of the many keys is to be able to receive what the orchestra gives you and to have a sense of what you yourself are giving. For that to happen, one needs to work on the internal and external listening, focusing on what is actually happening and not on the idea of what one thinks should be happening.”
Marianne Drobot - Artistic Producer of the Paris International Conducting Masterclass
“ Colin Metters is considered universally to be one of the world's most distinguished and sought-after conducting pedagogues. If the test of any great teacher is the respect that he commands from his students, then Colin Metters is without doubt a great teacher.”
Raymond Holden - conductor, broadcaster, lecturer and respected author of books on conductors and conducting.
“Colin enables musicians from many traditions to develop and thrive, both as musicians and people. It is his ability to place himself in other people's shoes that has defined his role as one of the great conducting mentors.”
Jonathan Freeman-Attwood - Principal, Royal Academy of Music
Testimonials from participants on previous Colin Metters' masterclasses:
“I want to thank you for the wonderful masterclass. I have been thinking deeply about what I learned from your masterful teaching. I have spent much time integrating this new information into myself and it has had a profound impact on my way forward in conducting. Thank you for your patience, humour and fairness with each and every one of us. You demonstrated to us the most extraordinary respect and dedication to teaching that I have seen in many years.”

“Colin Metters' pedagogy interconnects intellectual rigour, emotional honesty and gestural clarity. With an unflinching eye, Metters guides, interrogates assumptions, demands musical integrity and challenges the students to turn up the volume on their own imagination.”
Carolyn A.

“I could not have imagined or wished for a better teacher and mentor; someone with more intuition and dedication, insight and generosity. I count myself only too fortunate to have been your student Colin. For all this and much more please accept my gratitude and thanks.”

During his 30 year tenure as Head of Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music, Colin Metters established a conducting programme recognised internationally as world renowned. He now enjoys an independent freelance career as conducting pedagogue and mentor, working with aspiring conductors all over the world. He is Emeritus Professor of Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music, gives masterclasses each term at the Royal College of Music, has given masterclasses at the Music Academy in Krakow as Visiting Professor of Conducting and works regularly with the CIAC Conducting Academy.
A personal message from Colin Metters:
This new masterclass offers an exciting opportunity for conductors of all ages to spend nine intensive days immersed in the study of three great symphonies: an opportunity to develop their conducting knowledge, musically and technically, in a supportive environment.
I am thrilled to be directing this 1st Paris International Conducting Masterclass and look forward to meeting and getting to know the eight conductors who will be selected to participate.
“Inspiration and Revelation” will be our watchwords throughout our nine days together in our goal to give insight and guidance to all who are selected.
Early feedback suggests a strong response for this masterclass, so I would urge early application from conductors keen to be active participants.
